Clinical Cases CFD

Healthy

A healthy patient has a good ventilation of the entire nasal cavity. Healthy patients breathe roughly 10 L/min of air per nostril during inspiration.

As air travels parabolically the most ventilated area of the nasal cavity is generally the middle meatus at a distance of 3cm-5cm from the nostril.

Deviated Septum

The effects of a deviated septum on airflow can greatly vary. Generally, when the deviation is significant and closer to the tip of the nose, airflow disruption is more likely to occur.

In cases where the deviation is slight and closer to the pharynx airflow disruption is small and, in many cases, asymptomatic.

Empty Nose Syndrome (ENS)

Patient with empty nose syndrome suffer from both biological conditions such as nerve endings damage as well as badly distributed airflow.

Airflow in ENS patients reaches values of 4L/min in the olfactory bulb alone and 20L/min in each cavity (left and right).

Nasal Valve Collapse

Nasal Valve Collapse prevents airflow from ventilating the olfactory bulb, the superior and middle meatus causing significant obstruction. It is often accompanied by a sharp pressure drop in the nasal valve region.
